Former President Donald Trump, who has devised a number of nicknames for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has floated another — “Ron DeSoros” — linking his potential 2024 election rival to a favorite target of right-wing resentment.
Trump, in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, shared a Twitter user’s post that dropped the new nickname, adding to the former president’s other schoolyard attempts at ridicule, including “Ron DeSanctus” and “Ron DeSanctimonious.” Trump has denied calling DeSantis “Meatball Ron.”
The new nickname melds DeSantis’ name with that of liberal billionaire philanthropist George Soros, a favorite subject of right-wing conspiracy theories, and was posted next to a video claiming DeSantis used a 100-year-old World War II veteran as a COVID vaccine “guinea pig.”
The person who posted it on Twitter added: “But sure, DeSantis would have fired” Dr. Anthony Fauci, apparently a reference to DeSantis’ recent interview with Piers Morgan.
Trump called the post “classic.”
“So much for Ron and anti-vax,” Trump wrote. “Besides, he got the vaccine and booster, just doesn’t talk about it. He also closed up Florida, and its beaches.”
DeSantis, in a clip from his upcoming interview with Morgan, revealed that he is somewhat fond of one Trump nickname.
“I don’t know how to spell ‘DeSanctimonious.’ I don’t really know what it means,” he said.
“But you know, I kind of like it. It’s long. It’s got a lot of vowels. I mean, so, we’d go with that. That’s fine.”
