How Did ‘Socialism’ Become A Dirty Word?

In a 2019 Gallup poll, 4 in 10 Americans viewed socialism favorably. At the same time, politicians on both sides of the aisle are also using the word “socialist” as a slur against their opponents. So how did “socialism” become a dirty word in American politics?
