Stephen A. Smith dropped a hilarious explanation for why he would choose Charmander as his so-called starter Pokémon in the franchise’s video games.

On Thursday’s episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” the ESPN personality responded to a fan who sent him an image of three Pokémon — Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle — while asking, “Which one you taking.”

In games like Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, players are asked to select one of the three fictional creatures to accompany them as they start their monster-catching journey.

But Smith appeared puzzled by the fan’s inquiry.

“What the hell are these?” Smith asked. “What are these?”

The podcast host then proceeded to seriously fumble the names of the three Pokémon.

“Bulba-zar, Bulba-sour, whatever the hell it is. Sha-mander. Or the Squirtle,” Smith said before making his pick.

“Sha-mander. That’s who I would take because it reminds me of me, because of the forehead.”

He later asked his social media followers if he made the “right” choice, while sharing an edited image of his face on the body of the monster-taming character Ash Ketchum.
