This Is What Retail Insiders And Experts Plan To Buy On Black Friday

Get the inside scoop on hot deals these experts are planning to grab.

This year, the holiday shopping season started earlier than ever thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Retailers have been stretching out their sales windows and making more deals available online so that shoppers stuck inside can still grab their most-wanted items at discount.

Even so, the day after Thanksgiving still stands to be the biggest shopping day of the year. But not all Black Friday deals are created equal. So if you’re wondering what’s worth snagging that day, here are some of the top picks from people who track Black Friday deals for a living.

Vava 4K HDR Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector

Vava 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser TV Projector

“A couple times I’ve been close to pulling the trigger on the Vava 4K HDR ultra-short-throw projector, which turns any wall into a huge home theater. It normally sells for $2,800, but on Black Friday it will be $1,950 ― possibly even less. That’s still crazy expensive, but I’m breaking open the piggy bank. This model is simplicity defined: Just park it a few inches from a wall and you’re done. No crazy ceiling installation, no complicated external speaker system ― it’s literally a plug-and-play theater.” ― Rick Broida, senior commerce editor at CNET

MacBook Air Or Pro

“I’m going to see just how good the prices on Intel MacBook Airs and Pros get. Apple recently announced Airs and Pros with its own M1 chipset. That could mean better discounts than we’re used to seeing on the pre-M1 2020 releases, which would make them awfully tempting for me. Usually, high-end laptop deals on Black Friday are rarer than you’d think, but circumstances like this may drive exceptions.” ― Nathan Burrow, deals editor for Wirecutter

Google Nest Hub Max

Google Nest Hub Max

“We haven’t seen any indication it’ll go on sale for Black Friday, but I’m hoping it will. I’ve been wanting to put a smart display in our kitchen for help with recipes and timers and whatnot. We’re pretty solidly encamped in the Google ecosystem, so it’s only natural for us to try to keep the devices all in the same family. And we want the bigger screen because we’ll be using it for videos sometimes. The Nest Hub Max has a list price of $229, but I’m hoping for a decent discount to drop it to $180 (or lower!) for Black Friday.” ― Julie Ramhold, consumer analyst with DealNews

Household Paint

“I’ve been holding off on a few home improvement projects because of the spike in demand and supply shortage of paint and other home improvement items due to the coronavirus pandemic. I’ve been watching paint sales and expect some of the best prices to fall during the holiday shopping season, so I’ll likely buy what I need for my next project on Black Friday.” ― Gabrielle Pastorek, retail analyst for Finder

Multi-use pure oil blend

“I have my eye on a couple of things from the #BuyBlack Friday Gift Guide. I am so obsessed with Melanin Haircare’s multi-use pure oil blend. Say that five times fast! It’s amazing, it makes my hair healthier, thicker, strong. I use it every single day. It makes me feel beautiful, it makes me feel like Rhianna when I put it on. What Black woman doesn’t want that? Just saying this stuff is amazing.” ― Phoebe Robinson, comedian, writer, actress and host of Facebook’s weekly #BuyBlack Friday show

Instant Pot

“You really can’t get a better deal on an Instant Pot than over Black Friday. It’s such a hot holiday item and retailers race competitors to the bottom to offer the lowest price to win sales from shoppers, hoping they buy other items while shopping online or in store to make up for any loss in profits. However, when you keep your eye on the prize and don’t deter, this is a great deal at the average 50% off discount. I’ve seen some of the best deals at Walmart and will be eyeing their ads to see when I can snag it at the best price.”  Andrea Woroch, money-saving expert

PlayStation 5

“I’ve been trying to get a PS5 since release after missing out on the initial pre-order period with no luck. It’s been a pretty frustrating experience, with a handful of retailers temporarily renewing stock only to sell out within minutes. Sony has also directly sold consoles from its site, but a long queue forms immediately when stock refreshes, and the rare times I’ve gotten through, the console sells out before I can complete my purchase. Select retailers have announced ahead of time that they will have consoles on sale again for Black Friday, so I’ll try again. I’m not holding out too much hope, though, as it should be even busier than the random weekdays my previous failed attempts took place on. Still have to try!” ― Matthew Buzzi, hardware analyst for PCMag

Lexon Mino L Speaker

“I’ve had my eye on the Lexon Mino L speaker for a while. It has great Italian design going for it and will look at home anywhere in my apartment. A Black Friday sale would mean I could pick up two of them for some stereo sound. The only thing I’m really torn about is what color to get.” ― Chandra Steele, senior features writer for PCMag

Havana Inflatable Hot Tub Spa

Hydro-Force Havana Inflatable Hot Tub

“Just like the rest of the country, I’ve been stuck at home most of the year. This past summer I wanted to spend more time outdoors and I looked into purchasing an inexpensive inflatable hot tub. Unfortunately for me, everyone else had the same idea and they sold out quickly. In fact, during the summer, they were impossible to find for a retail price and a lot of third-party sellers were selling for almost double the retail price. Even though winter is coming, I am looking to plan ahead and get the hot tub now. Walmart will be offering this hot tub for 50% off, which is much better than paying over retail for it!” ― Jon Vincent, founder and spokesperson for EarlyBlackFriday

What Our Shopping Editors Are Buying On Black Friday And Cyber Monday 2020
A lounge jumpsuit that looks like dressy pajamas(01 of12)
Open Image Modal
I've been feeling really burned out with everything in my closet these days. I'm tired of wearing the same things, but my dressier items just don't make sense much these days. I noticed that Eloquii is having a massive Black Friday sale for half-off everything (and with special markdowns on select items), so I'm using the sale as an excuse to stock up on some cuter loungewear. I love the sleek-yet-professional look of this satin lounge jumpsuit and can't wait to wear it on Zoom calls. - Brittany Nims, head of HuffPost Finds (credit:Eloquii)
A pair of pom pom slippers for hanging out around the house(02 of12)

After months of staying indoors for most of the time, my old slippers could use a bit of break themselves. So I've been looking out for a pair that will feel like a second pair of socks — comfortable, cozy and cheap. I saw that ban.do is offering 30% off sitewide for Black Friday and while I was looking for more sweatshirts (this "feelings" sweatshirt is a favorite), I found these adorable Verloop slippers. I ordered them right away. They feature a fleece lining, non-slip sole and cute little pom poms. I have a feeling these will sell out quickly. The best part? They're under $50 even before the Black Friday discount. - Ambar Pardilla, writer, HuffPost Finds (credit:Ban.do )
Winter skincare essentials(03 of12)

Winter is coming which means I need to do everything I can to defend my dry skin from the elements. I’ll be stocking up on my Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream (find it for 25% off)— a thick, cool cream that's very gentle on the skin, lasts all day and absorbs very quickly — which I apply in the morning. At night I apply a thick layer of COSRX's Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream (find it for 30% off)— a super thick balm loaded with sunflower seed oil and ceramide that gives me plump, hydrated skin. - Danielle Gonzalez, Editor, HuffPost Finds (credit:Kiehl's / Anthropologie)
A dermatologist-recommended Vitamin C serum(04 of12)

During the last facial I had before the pandemic took off in the U.S., my Heyday facialist recommended Ursa Major's Brighten Up Vitamin C Serum to brighten up my chronically dull skill and dark under eyes. I ended up buying on bottle when it was on sale for Prime Day and I'm completely obsessed with it. It's like giving your dull, dehydrated skin a shot of orange juice. When I discovered that all Ursa Major skin care products are 20% off on Amazon for Black Friday, I thought I'd better stock up on the Vitamin C serum for the long haul. - Nims (credit:Amazon)
A sweater that's under $10 (!!!)(05 of12)
Open Image Modal
Okay, so I spotted this sweater last week at Nordstrom and thought the deal was too good to be true. So I ordered it with a little hesitancy — I mean, how would a $10 sweater feel and hold up? Fortunately, it came within a couple of days and I've already worn it twice in a row. It's soft on the skin and thin enough so you won't be sweating all day at work. The sweater is definitely loose (I got my normal size), which I actually prefer, but I'd size down if you want a tighter fit. I love it so much that I'm buying it this week in gray, sky blue and this pretty persimmon shade. - Pardilla (credit:Nordstrom )
A hands-free vibe(06 of12)
Open Image Modal
It's been a long, long pandemic. But there's been one clear winner of all this home alone time: sex toy companies. This premium hands-free vibrator from Dame Products is the brand's best seller because it's designed with flexible wings to stay in place so you can stay in the moment. This Black Friday, the brand is having a rare sitewide sale, so you can get this normally $135 vibe for 20% off. Is it truly worth the hype? We'll see! - Nims (credit:Dame Products)
A new set of goold hoop earrings(07 of12)
Open Image Modal
Gold hoops are kind of my staple, I always have a pair in. So I'm always on the hunt for a lighter, shinier and more secure pair (RIP to all the pairs I've lost and the graveyard of lonely hoops in my jewelry box). I've been eyeing these Mejuri Large Hoops for a while and think they'll make a nice holiday gift for myself, especially since they're offering up to 20% off. -Gonzalez (credit:Mejuri)
An affordable under-eye concealer(08 of12)
Open Image Modal
I bought a little jar of Glossier's Stretch Concealer a few months back, and am now dubbing it my favorite affordable concealer. I particularly love that it's buildable, so I can get as much or as little coverage as I want. And, as with all Glossier products, it leaves just a hint of healthy dewiness behind, so even when I'm wearing just a swipe of it, my skin looks glossy and hydrated as if I'm going au naturel. Right now, everything at Glossier is 25% off sitewide, so I'm stocking up. You can save even more on sets right now. - Nims (credit:Glossier)
A choker that's handmade in Greenwich Village(09 of12)
Open Image Modal
Of course, you can always expect the big-box brands like Walmart, Target and Nordstrom to have some sort of deals going on during Black Friday. But it's important to support small and independent businesses when you can. Lots of smaller shops have already put out their Black Friday deals, too — including Common Era, Caraway and Great Jones. So in the spirit of shopping small, I'll be checking out the sale from Montserrat, a New York City-based jewelry brand. It's offering 25% off all jewelry this Black Friday with code BLKFRDY. And one of the pieces that caught my eye was this pearl choker. Not only will it show up on video chats but it's delicate enough to go with just about anything. No two pearls are exactly alike so you're getting something that's kind of one-of-a-kind, too. - Pardilla (credit:Montserrat )
The only water bottle that keeps my hydrated(10 of12)
Open Image Modal
"This water bottle has totally changed my water drinking habits over the past nine months. The glass bottle keeps the water at perfect room temperature, the mouth piece is a comfortable size and it isn't too heavy. I currently have the bkr 1L and fill it up twice a day to drink the recommended 68 ounces. The brand is currently offering 25% off so I ordered another 1L and a smaller size to bring with me on the go. - Gonzalez (credit:bkr)
A cropped turtleneck sweater I can dress up or down(11 of12)
Open Image Modal
"I love the look of a cropped sweater with oversized sleeves, so when I spotted this turtleneck on sale for half off at Urban Outfitters — I ordered it in three colors. I know I'll get a lot of use out of it because I can pair with jeans and skirts for dressed up and dressed down looks." — Gonzalez (credit:Urban Outfitters)
A serum our editor swears by(12 of12)

I’m a long time Glossier user so I always do a big restock whenever they have a sale (everything is 25% off right now). My work-from-home makeup routine has consisted exclusively of Futuredew, Stretch Concealer and Boy Brow for a natural, refreshed and glowing look. Futuredew is probably my favorite product — I smear one pump of it across my cheekbones, eyelids and nose for a dewy, just-walked-out-of-the steam-room glow. I might also treat myself to the pink Glossier hoodie. - Gonzalez (credit:Glossier)
