The tech company has been under intense scrutiny after the board fired its CEO before reinstating him this week.
The tech giant had previously announced that it was bringing in Altman and former OpenAI President Greg Brockman to lead a new AI research team.
Altman will lead a new advanced AI research team at the tech giant along with some of his former colleagues.
A review found Altman was “not consistently candid in his communications with the board,” the company said. Board chair Greg Brockman later said he quit.
Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans and running wild have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.
Sam Altman, the chief executive of the company behind ChatGPT, urged lawmakers to install guardrails for AI technology.
“We have more and more concentrated power and wealth," Sam Altman said.
