“Following the birth, wildlife care specialists noticed that the calf’s condition began to deteriorate, including difficulty standing and not nursing,” the park said Thursday.
Genetic testing has confirmed that two male chicks hatched in 2001 and 2009 from unfertilized eggs were related to their mothers. Neither was related to a male.
It appears the infection came from a member of the park’s wildlife care team who also tested positive for the virus.
This is one bird-brained blooper.
