Thoughtful Thieves Steal Gnome, Return It With Pics Of Its Epic Trip

A traveling gnome comeshome.

They finally let the truth be gnome.

A woman in Victoria, British Columbia had a stolen garden gnome returned to her with a little added bonus — a photo album brimming with the lawn ornament’s international travels.

“It brought a smile to my face as I read the book,” Bev York, the owner of the gnome, told The Huffington Post.

The album.

York’s soccer playing gnome had gone missing in December of 2015, but she didn’t think much of it, telling HuffPost that she figured it was stolen.

On July 25, the gnome had magically reappeared. He was left in a clear bag tied to York’s gate along with a book that illustrated his travels.

The gnome, who, according to the book had been re-named Leopold by his captors, had done quite a bit of traveling. The little gnome posed for pictures in Port Angeles, Washington and spent some time on the beach, sipping Margaritas, while traveling down the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. He had even snapped a “selfie” in front of the Grand Canyon.

“Hi, my name is Leopold the traveling gnome,” the book reads. “One morning back on December 15, I saw a motorhome toddle along Finlayson Arm Road and I thought to myself, ‘There’s got to be more to life than standing here knee-deep in rainwater being peed on by the neighborhood dogs and staring at the same view every single day.”

“It is a cute prank,” York said, adding she digs his new name as well. “It seems to suit him.”

CTV Vancouver Island points out that there is one clue as to who stole the gnome, being that there are several pictures of a boy cuddling with the Leopold in the album. But York does not recognize him.

Regardless, York doesn’t hold any hard feelings towards the thoughtful thieves.

“I think the people [who did this] have a great sense of whimsy and put a lot of effort into the book.”

And her favorite part?

“The whole book is my favorite. It’s well written and cute as a bug’s ear.”

"Since I started traveling independently, I've made it a point to see some form of live theater no matter where I visit. My collection of over 500 playbills and stagebills comes from around the world. Some of my favorites include a hilariously bad 'Mamma Mia!' in Prague and 'Hamilton' on Broadway this past May." -Curtis Wong, Senior Queer Voices Editor (credit:Damon Dahlen/Huffington Post)

“I got this special edition of The Little Prince when I was in Paris last fall. Every time I see it on my bookshelf, I think about my dad, who passed away 10 years ago -- it was his favorite. Sure, there are many versions of The Little Prince out there, and I'm sure I could find this one online. But that's not the point. Had I not chanced into that bookstore while traveling, I would have missed out on a memento connecting me not just to the happy memory of the trip, but to my father, as well.” -Damon Beres, Senior Tech Editor (credit:Gabriela Landazuri Saltos/Huffington Post)

"If there was one thing I'd save in a flood, my travel journals would be it. I started doing them the first time I traveled alone, as something to fill my time. Since then, I've always picked up business cards, stickers, scraps of paper and doodles of places, writing memories around them. I also love to save maps and seemingly inconsequential things like postcards, subway tickets, and even small denominations of cash! My years of travel diaries are amazing to look back through." -Meg Robertson, Editorial Producer (credit:Damon Dahlen/Huffington Post)
