The president of ABC Entertainment said Constance Wu will remain on the new season of “Fresh Off the Boat,” even after the actress had a Twitter meltdown in response to the sitcom’s renewal.
Wu, who tweeted on Friday that she was “so upset right now that I’m literally crying,” along with several other tweets that seemed to express disappointment over the renewal of the comedy, will continue to play Jessica Huang in the new season, Karey Burke, president of ABC Entertainment, told reporters on Tuesday.
“There’s been no thought to recasting Constance. We love what she does on the show and we love the show,” Burke said at the Disney 2019 Upfront Experience, an ad-focused gathering featuring ESPN, ABC, and National Geographic, among other TV brands.
“We never really considered not bringing back ‘Fresh Off the Boat,’” Burke added. “The show’s just too strong for us and we love it.”
Wu explained the day after her Friday tweetstorm that she didn’t mean to trash-talk “Fresh Off the Boat.” She said she was “temporarily upset” because the show’s renewal “meant I had to give up another project that I was really passionate about.”
Burke said she had been unaware that Wu was pursuing another opportunity, and said she’s “going to choose to believe Constance’s most recent communication about the show that she is happy to return, and the cast and crew is happy to have her back, and we’re thrilled to keep her in the show.”
Wu concluded her explanation by saying she does “love and enjoy” the show. “I hope you believe me.”
“People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts — that conflict is a part of being human,” she wrote on Twitter. “So I can both love the show/cast/crew but at the same to be disappointed that I lost that other unrelated job.”
