Trump Announces Paris Accord Decision With ... Is That Jazz Music?

Striking a bad note.

Ahead of President Donald Trump’s announcement Thursday that America will leave the Paris Accord, press conference attendees were greeted with an odd sound: jazz music.

Event organizers saw fit to have the United States Marine Band on hand in the Rose Garden, where, among other songs, they reportedly playedSummertime.”

Because nothing says “I took this momentous decision seriously” quite like the laid-back sound of smooth jazz.

As a reminder, here are the opening lyrics for that classic song:

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush, little baby, don’t you cry.

While some White House events do feature live music, it’s an unusual addition for a press conference.

Axios’ Jonathan Swan attended the event, remarking the administration seemed to be in a “celebratory mood.”

Twitter was quick to draw comparisons to the band aboard the Titanic, famous for playing dutifully though their fates on the sinking ship had already been sealed.
